Know the Origin of Your Limo
Whenever we buy anything we are always conscious of where the product has come from and who has made it. Sometimes it is because we want to know whether our favourite designer has had a hand in a new garment or we simply want to do the right thing and buy products made in our own country from our own materials.
We also recognise quality through looking at the origins of our purchases and the same can be said about the limousine industry. Because limousines are such a manufactured and modified product, it is important for the limo hire companies who are buying these newly created limousines to know where they came from and who did the work on them.
There are specific guidelines for stretching certain brands of limousines, but not all luxury car manufacturers are so supportive about having their vehicles stretched. Therefore the coachbuilders who are stretching these other luxury cars must adhere to similar guidelines to those approved by the other manufacturers.
However, not all coachbuilders take the same amount of care and follow all of the rules when stretching luxury cars into stretch limousines and therefore, limo hire companies come to know the coachbuilders they can trust and whose work they want to buy for their company.
Therefore, all modified, i.e. stretched, limousines much carry a plate on the limousine stating who stretched the limousine and to what regulations and guidelines the limo now adheres. This helps the limo hire companies choose and identify the limos they want to buy the same way we look at the labels on bags and clothes.
There are also similar regulations which apply to goods vehicles which have a gross weight of over 3.5 tonnes. These vehicles must have a plate showing the manufacturer, vehicle type, engine type power, VIN, number of axels and maximum design and plated weights.
This is to make it easier for on the spot regulation by the authorities and while limousines often have a similar plate, it is not on all stretched limos. Therefore, there is a debate about whether stretched limousines should have vehicle plating too, even though they are not strictly goods vehicles.
